Client care: Your dog has serious injuries to both of his back legs. He has had surgery to fix the broken bones. We put a metal plate in the right lower leg to stabilize it. We put a plate and screws in the left thigh bone. He will need one week of complete cage rest and five weeks of controlled exercise. This means he will need short, supervised walks on a leash. You need to return in seven to ten days for a recheck of the x-rays and to take the stitches out. If everything is healing well, we will want to see him again at the end of the six weeks of rest for more x-rays. If everything is healing well, we will schedule an appointment to have the plate and pins removed. In a full-grown dog we wouldn't normally remove the plate, but because your puppy is still potentially growing, we will need to remove it. We put a patch on your dog that gives him pain medication over three days. We put it on yesterday at the end of his surgery. At the end of the three days, if you feel like he is painful, you can give him some Rimadyl. It will help his pain and the swelling. Give it to him up to twice daily as you feel he needs it. We are keeping him on the Cephazolin antibiotic your other veterinarian prescribed to protect the surgery site. He may have a little swelling at the suture sites. If it seems excessively swollen or red, or if he is licking at his wounds, give us a call. If you notice vomiting while he has the pain patch on, that is normal. Call us if it seems excessive or if he begins having diarrhea. Watch for normal eating, drinking, and normal bathroom habits. Call us with any other problems or questions.
