Management Systemic antibiotics based on culture and sensitivity, start by treating empirically with amikacin. Lavage joint to remove products of inflammation using 3-6 liters polyionic fluids. Following lavage, intra-articular antibiotics should be administered using aminoglycosides. Kidney values will need to be monitored and fluid therapy be administered if necessary because aminoglycosides are used. NSAIDS will also be used to limit inflammation response and improve patient comfort. After the acute inflammation resolves, Hylanuronan and PSGAG should be used for chondroprotective effect and normalization of the synovial fluid/ limiting inflammation. Rest from exercise to allow healing of damaged soft tissue and articular cartilage but do not completely immobilize the joint. Passive motion is helpful in maintaining the range of motion of the fetlock joint. Prognosis The prognosis is guarded to poor since the lesion involves the growth plate. This infection is damaging the growth plate and is altering the maturation of the bone, which, could lead to deformity of the metatarsus and permanent lameness. Since this is only one joint and this is a foal, this makes it a slightly better prognosis.
