About The Biomedical Engineering Specialization

The Biomedical Engineering specialization (BMES) is a program that began in the Fall of 2004 at the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary . The program is over seen by the Centre of Bioengineering Research and Education (CBRE), funded by the ACCESS program from the Government of Alberta. The program accepts roughly 35 students per year from the first year of Engineering. Students are placed in traditional engineering discipline such as Electrical, Software, Chemical, Civil, Geomatics and Mechanical Engineering as well. The BMES is equivalent of a second major in Biomedical Engineering.

About BMESS

The Biomedical Engineering Students' Society (BMESS) was founded in Spring of 2005 by Michele Johnson and Bruce Chang. BMESS is a club similar to other clubs which represents a traditional discipline in Engineering such as the Electrical Engineering Students' Society. It is also the first Biomedical Engineering student club in Western Canada . It represents students from both the undergraduate and graduate program of Biomedical Engineering. BMESS is responsible for the social well being of it's students to enhance the post secondary education experience. The club sets up social gathering events as well as getting students involved in faculty wide events such as Frosh-Week and Engineering-Week. BMESS also cares for the well being for the academic success of it's students. It prepares practice exam manuals to help students prepare for midterm and final examinations for courses in the BMES program. BMESS recognizes the University of Calgary is a strong school in health and well being. BMESS prepares Biomedical Engineering seminars in cooperation with the CBRE for students interested in Biomedical Engineering and to extend the Biomedical Engineering learning experience. Like all clubs on campus, sanctioned by the Students' Union, has an elected executive council. Students can run for office as early as mid March. Elections are held at the end of March or early April. The term of office is one year, but students can run for an indefinite number of years, so long as they are still a student of the University of Calgary .
