Systemic Lupus Erythematosis                          


SLE is defined by a chronic autoimmune disease targeting connective tissues and DNA.  SLE has multi-system affects including the heart, lungs, joints, blood vessels, skin, liver, and nervous system.

An exact cause of SLE is not known, however individuals with HLA-DR2 and HLA-DR3 genes are more  susceptible to SLE.   SLE is commonly a type III hypersenstivity reaction.  

Symptoms and Signs of SLE include:

    Joint Pain    Muscle Pain    Fatigue    Cardia Issues    Renal impairment    Anemia    Photosenitivity

A Common sign of SLE is the butterfly rash.




Testing

 Testing uses Antinuclear Antibody testing using flourescent labeled antibodies.     

Treatment:

 involves use of anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants.
