Instructions for creating a Concept Map from scratch 1. Open CMap Tools. 2. Click on File in the upper left hand corner of the screen and then New ProjectÉ 3. Type in a name for the project where it says "Project Name:" and select the server to save it to. 4. Make sure the new project name is highlighted. 5. Click on File in the upper left hand corner of your screen and then New Map. Create Concepts 6. Create concepts: a. Once the blank project opens, double click anywhere on the white area. This will create a box with four question marks (????). b. Erase the question marks and type in text. 7. Repeat step 5 for all of the text boxes you wish to create. Create Relationships 8. Create Relationships between the concepts: a. Click on the starting box to highlight it. Once highlighted, a box above the text with two arrows will appear. b. Click on the arrows and drag the pointer to the destination box. Once the two are connected, a smaller box with four question marks (????) will appear. c. Erase the question marks and type in the text for the relationship. Add Resources to Concepts 9. Add a text file resources to the project: a. To add a text file resource to a text box, the item must be created and saved first and then added to the project. 1) The text file must be saved in text only format with the extension .TXT (Simple Text for the Mac can create these). 2) Save the file in a folder and remember where it is. b. Click on your project in the list under the specified server. c. Click on File in the upper left hand corner of your screen and then Import Resource. d. A box will open listing all of the folders in a specific location on your hard drive. e. Locate the file(s) you wish to add by navigating through the folders. f. Once the file(s) is found, highlight it and click Add. g. If the Resource Type displays "Unknown type," you can click on the down arrow and select the file "Text Document" type from the list. h. Repeat this until all the files you wish to add are in the list. i. To remove a file that was added, highlight the file to remove, and click Remove. j. When finished, click Ok. k. Under the project list on the server, new folders will be created for each type of resource added ("Text"). 10. Add a graphic file resources to the project: a. To add a text file resource to a text box, the item must be created and saved first and then added to the project. 1) The graphic file must be saved as a JPEG or GIF (extension .JPEG or .GIF) (Adobe PhotoShop can create these). 2) Save the file in a folder and remember where it is. b. Click on your project in the list under the specified server. c. Click on File in the upper left hand corner of your screen and then Import Resource. d. A box will open listing all of the folders in a specific location on your hard drive. e. Locate the file(s) you wish to add by navigating through the folders. f. Once the file(s) is found, highlight it and click Add. g. If the Resource Type displays "Unknown type," you can click on the down arrow and select the file "JPEG Image" or "GIF Image" type from the list. h. Repeat this until all the files you wish to add are in the list. i. To remove a file that was added, highlight the file to remove, and click Remove. j. When finished, click Ok. k. Under the project list on the server, new folders will be created for each type of resource added ("Images"). 11. Add a video file resources to the project: a. To add a text file resource to a text box, the item must be created and saved first and then added to the project. 1) The text file must be saved as a AVI, MOV, or MPEG (extension .AVI, .MOV, or .MPEG). 2) Save the file in a folder and remember where it is. b. Click on your project in the list under the specified server. c. Click on File in the upper left hand corner of your screen and then Import Resource. d. A box will open listing all of the folders in a specific location on your hard drive. e. Locate the file(s) you wish to add by navigating through the folders. f. Once the file(s) is found, highlight it and click Add. g. If the Resource Type displays "Unknown type," you can click on the down arrow and select the file "AVI Movie," "Quicktime Movie," or "MPEG Movie" type from the list. h. Repeat this until all the files you wish to add are in the list. i. To remove a file that was added, highlight the file to remove, and click Remove. j. When finished, click Ok. k. Under the project list on the server, new folders will be created for each type of resource added ("Videos"). 12. Add internet resources to the project: a. Click on your project in the list under the specified server. b. Click on File in the upper left hand corner of your screen and then Import Internet Resource. c. A box will open. Enter the "Description", "Caption", and "URL" for the link. d. Make sure the correct server and project are specified. e. Click Ok. f. Repeat this process until all desired links are added to the project. g. Under the project list on the server, a new "URLs" folder will appear. 13. Add resources to the concept map: a. Click on the desired text box to highlight it. b. Click on Edit on the menu bar and then ResourcesÉ c. Click on the folder that contains the file you wish to add d. Select the file to add, and click Add. e. Repeat this until all the files you wish to add are in the list. f. To remove a file that was added, highlight the file to remove, and click Remove. g. When finished, click Ok h. An icon will display under the text box. When the mouse hovers it, the file included will be displayed. 14. To create other concept maps to be included in the process, repeat steps 4 Ð12. Link Concepts Maps 15. Link one concept map to another: a. Repeat step 9, but instead of adding a file, add the desired concept map from the project folder. Save Project 16. Save the project. a. Click on File in the upper left hand corner of the screen and then Save As. b. A box will open. Enter the "Map Name" (replace the "" text), "Description" (replace the "" text), "Creator" (replace the "" text), and make sure the correct server and project are specified. c. Click Save when finished. Export the Project to HTML 17. Export the project to HTML: a. Make sure the project folder is highlighted. b. Click on File in the upper left hand corner of the screen, and then Export to HTML.. c. Make sure the "Set Location" is correct (Your professor will tell you where to save it). d. Click on Export. e. Your project is now ready for submission. Edit the Project 18. Edit preexisting concept maps: a. Open the project you wish to edit by clicking on the project folder on the server and double clicking on the map to edit. b. Click on Edit on the menu bar and then Switch Project to Edit Mode. c. You can now edit the concept map. d. Save all changes and repeat step 17.
