Discharge (assuming the dog is eighty pounds) One 75 mg tablet of Rimadyl should be given twice a day. It is a chewable so you can feed it by hand or put it your dogÕs food. On days that your dog seems extra painful you can give up to three, 325 mg, tablets of aspirin. Ascriptin_ is especially good because is Maalox_ coated and will be easy on your dogÕs stomach. Two or three times a day, apply a heating pad to the hips for at least 10 minutes, but the more times the better. After the using the heating pad, when the muscles are warm and supple, perform passive physical therapy, as was shown to you in the clinic. Feed your dog 1250 Kcal per day of a canine large breed growth dog food, broken into two feedings per day. The restricted diet will help prevent developmental skeletal problems in the future. Moderate exercise, such as walks and swimming, will help your dog stay strong and less painful. She should be restricted from activities that stress the joints, such as jumping off of the bed, climbing stairs, running, etc. You should bring your dog back into the clinic in two weeks for reevaluation. We will decide at that time if the medication and therapy are working and adjust the dosage as your dog grows. You should keep in mind that this regimen only treats the problem but is not a cure. In the future if the problems worsen we can take more extreme measures, such as surgery. We will discuss those options, if necessary, in the future.
