Management 1. Total Hip Replacement-pain free fixation successful in 90% of cases Complications: luxation, sciatic neuropraxia, infection Procedure: Remove Femoral Head and neck and replaced by a cobalt chromium femoral component. The acetabulum is reamed and a high density polyethylene acetabular component is implanted. Methyl Methacrylate bone cement holes the implants in place. Reasons for total hip replacement: clinical signs of lameness, no concurrent orthopedic or neurological disease, and no concurrent infectious disease, dogs must have enough stock bone in the pelvis to accommodate the cup, and a large enough medullary canal for the femoral component Cost: $1600-3500 per hip 2. Pharmacological Treatment: Manage with analgestics until 18 months of age when growth plates have closed. Analgesics and NSAIDS-will minimize joint pain Aspirin: 10-15 mg/kg BID; use only on painful days, no more than 2-3 days in a row Carprofen Etodolac Glucosamine and Chondritin Sulfate-will improve joint health 3. Nutritional Management: weight reduction diet Large Breed Adult dog food fed according to daily energy requirement (DER) 4. Rest/Exercise Swimming and hill climbing
