Treatment plan Because our client wishes to keep expenses to a minimum our recommendations are designed to keep costs down. Our recommendations are as follows: medical treatment to minimize discomfort Control feeding to keep weight at an optimal level Rest and restricted exercise to decrease stress on coxofemoral joints Treat with analgesics such as Asprin, Carprofen or Etodolac consistently Euthanasia is also an option if medical treatment does not sufficiently reduce pain and symptoms If our client wishes to pursue more expensive alternatives we will discus surgical options such as a femoral head and neck osteotomy which will stop the pain and lameness and allow a good quality of life for the patient. The surgery involves removal of the head neck of the femur completely removing the painful joint and allowing the hind end to be supported by fibrous connective tissue and muscle. The surgery may be done on one or both coxofemoral joints.
