Physical Exam: The foal has a temperature of 101.8, a pulse of 60, and a respiratory rate of 52. The foal is bright, alert, and responsive, with all systems within normal limits except for the musculoskeletal system. The foal is toe touching lame on the right rear limb. Soft tissue swelling (a pitting edema) is evident on palpation starting 12 cm proximal to the fetlock and extending just distal to it. The foal exhibits pain/is resentful of palpation of the area. Orthopedic Exam: No foreign body is found in the foot, and the foal shows no resentment upon examination with a hoof tester. The foal is even more lame after manipulation of the fetlock region, and does not place her foot on the ground. There is no evidence of instability or crepitance upon palpation.
