Because of the history of trauma and the unilateral presence of medially luxating patella it is suspected that this condition is due to a ruptured joint capsule rather than due to congenitally present factors. Because of the financial constraints of our client we do not recommend further imaging techniques for a more definitive diagnosis. Our group proposes exploratory surgery of the stifle joint and concurrently fixing any abnormalities that are present within the joint. It is expected that we will find the joint capsule torn and fix the problem through imbrication of the joint capsule. This technique involves pleating and folding the capsule to realign it to where it should be and provide extra stability. However it is also possible that it will be necessary to correct the joint through release of the fascia on the medial side of the joint and trochleoplasty, deepening of the trochlear groove of the femur so that the patella is less likely to realign itself incorrectly.
