Management Plan Because the fracture in TitanŐs femur did not heal perfectly straight, she will experience constant and abnormal pressure on the stifle joint. However, due to her small size, this can be treated with conservative management incorporating proper diet, limited and supervised exercise, and pain control. Proper diet is necessary to maintain an ideal body condition score and avoid obesity. This will help decrease the stress on TitanŐs joints. This will help keep the condition from worsening. Also, Titan should be limited from rough play and extreme exercise. Activities such as leash walking on non-pavement and swimming would help strengthen her stifle and hopefully decrease the amount of pain she feels. Lastly, in order to help Titan feel better and maintain a healthy activity level, pain control medications should be considered. There are a few choices like Etogesic or Rimadyl. These medications should be given daily at first to decrease the pain and to maintain the use of the affected leg. Once Titan seems to be doing better she can take the medication only as needed for pain. TitanŐs owner must keep a close eye on her. If the condition does not improve or worsens Titan needs to be re-evaluated. As a last resort surgery might be the only way to relief the pressure currently experienced in the stifle.
