Explanation of Facts


1. Signalment included as a base and for guidance -18 month old intact male.  This is a 
young animal, whose bones might not be totally fused and may still be in the process 
of maturing.
2. Hit by car Ð Obviously this is the cause of trauma in this case.
3. Treated previously (LRGs, Prednisolone, Duragesic, Butorphanol, Cephalozin) Ð Dog 
currently might not be expressing pain and might seem very comfortable due to the 
drugs it was given.
4. Before being hit by a car Ramon was perfectly healthy, vaccines and dewormings 
were up to date.  This leads us to believe that the problem is only caused by the 
accident.
5. Eating Big Red dry dog food Ð Might not be the diet of choice.  Owner might 
consider switching the animal to a better formulated diet.
6. TPR is normal and weight is appropriate.
7. Physical findings:
_ Non weight bearing on both hind legs
_ There appears not to be any nerve damage because there is superficial and 
deep pain sensation in both legs and tail/ perineum. Also, motor function is 
present in both legs and tail. No pain or bone distortions could be palpated 
along the spine.  However,  reflex responses on hind legs are difficult to 
evaluate Ð inconsistent reflexes
_ Left leg seems to be severely damage by the accident, the leg is swollen all the 
way down to the toes.  In addition, bone continuity of the Left femur is 
suspect (abnormal movement and crepitation), but cannot localize between 
femur, hip joint or pelvis.  This information leads us to believe that the leg 
was severely affected.  One of the major structures (femur, hip joint or pelvis) 
seems to have been affected, in addition the swelling is over a large area 
leading to pain and lameness.
_ Right leg appears to have been affected as well - leg is swollen distal to the 
stifle and there are superficial skin abrasions on lateral side.  In addition, 
instability of the right tibia does not appear to be continues.  However, the 
joints in the leg appear to be normal.  Although this leg was also affected it 
was not as severely affected, swelling and damage are more localized.
