Hypothesis 3 Soft tissue damage The third hypothesis is soft tissue damage due to trauma. There is a possibility of muscle crushing from the hit by car. This hypothesis is due to the fact that there is edema and swelling of the hind limbs and that the dog is non-weight bearing. The swelling is distal to the stifle in the right leg and the left hind leg is swollen all the way to the toes. The dog does not appear to have problems with any joints or the spinal cord, but he probably does have some fractures in the hind limbs. The muscles over the fracture sites are most likely to be injured, either due to the blunt force of the car or from the actual breaking of the bone. The crushing of the dog to the ground by the car could cause significant muscle and bone damage, making the dog hind limb lame in both legs. This may also cause inconsistent reflex response due to the pain of movement and mechanical difficulties associated with these injuries.
