The radial nerve courses over the lateral aspect of the limb as it emerges from the medial and long heads of the triceps. It then continues distally on the lateral aspect of the elbow making it prone to traumatic damage. The resulting partial or complete laceration of the radial nerve would result in a failure of conducting the propagation potential to the target tissues once a nervous stimuli is sent from the Central Nervous System. The target tissues, extensors of the forelimb, would not be able to contract resulting in marked flexion of joints of the forelimb. The exact presentation will depend on the location of the trauma. A higher nerve laceration is suggested with these clinical signs. A dropping elbow is from the inability of the triceps to contract and extend the elbow. The foal is also dragging the right front hoof and resting it on its dorsal surface because it is unable to extend the coffin and pastern joint. Because the shoulder and elbow are not in use there is general atrophy of the shoulder area. There is no pain associated with this lesion in the lower limb so the animal is able to rest the hoof on the ground when standing.
