Prognosis The prognosis for a surgically corrected patellar luxation will depend on both the extent of the original injury and the degree of surgical correction required. If a complete meniscectomy is required, the dog is more likely to experience degenerative joint changes over time. The interval between surgery and when the dog will start to use the limb will also be affected by the complexity of the surgery such that more extensive surgical correction will require a more lengthy recovery. Overall, results of patellar luxation surgery indicate a success rate of approximately 90%. Accordingy to Willauer and Vasseur, no lameness was observed in 92% of corrected cases, although 48% had persistent palpable patellar luxation post-surgery. The recurrent luxations were always of a lesser grade than the preoperative grade, and regardless of the degree of lameness, most dogs had radiographic signs of degenerative joint disease.
