Also, the size, age and weight of the dog point more to a traumatic injury. Medium to large breeds are more predisposed to synovial cell sarcoma. Female- Allows us to consider sex predilections. Females more commonly acquire cranial cruciate ligament ruptures than males. Left hind limb lameness- This localizes the injury to the left hind leg. Difficulty getting up- This shows that the injury is probably located within a joint or some structure involved in the extension or flexion of the leg. Can walk well once up- This tells that the normal concussion sustained from walking doesnТt have much of an effect on the animal. Standing still, the lameness is barely toe touching- Tells that the dog is painful or has some other restriction on extention of the left leg. Partial weight-bearing lameness- This tells us that the injury is not completely intolerable but is restricting. Effusion of left stifle- This localizes the abnormality and shows that there may be inflammation involved with the injury Hip joints have no pain or laxity- This localizes the injury to the stifle area and indicates that there is no systemic pathology at work. Collateral ligaments intact- Rules out collateral ligament rupture Patellas normally positioned and mobile- Probably not patellar luxation Distention of joint capsule on both sides of the straight patellar ligament- Shows inter-articular involvement. Close to CCL Pain on manipulation of stifle- This localizes the lameness and points to inflammation or damage to the stifle joint. Obese- This places extra stress on the joints and may predispose to injury. Relatively active dog- Points to possible traumatic injury 4-5mm cranial drawer sign on left leg- Cranial laxity points to a CCL rupture of the left leg <2mm cranial drawer on right leg- Gives comparison to left leg. Supports CCL rupture of left leg. May support possible degenerative ligament disease. Six years old- Supports neoplasia. Synovial cell sarcoma occurs in middle aged dogs (6-8 yrs). Also supports degenerative and other age related problems.
