The area where we have localized the pain to has mostly tendons as soft tissue. After trauma, cytokines are released and attract leukocytes (neutrophils and macrophages) to the area. These are present to defend the area from infection and to remove necrotic debris and initiate repair. The capillary hemmorhage and resultant fibrin deposition separates the tendon fibers and weakens them. The cytokines also increase vascular permeability, which would cause pitting edema, and swelling. These cytokines, especially bradykinin, can also cause pain, leading to lameness. Tendinitis is often localized to one area, and does not spread. In this foal, we only found the signs of inflammation in the right hind fetlock. Excessive manipulation of an area of inflammation tends to exacerbate pain, which is consistent with our orthopedic findings. Trauma could cause rupture of the joint capsule, which would increase inflammation. It could also cause dislocation and possible relocation of the joint. A two-week old foal is unlikely to prescribe itself cage rest, so the increased movement would worsen inflammation. l "#l ¤¤¤"#l ░╨/ ░р=!░"░#Ра$Ра%░ [4@ё 4NormalCJOJPJQJmH <A@Є б<Default Paragraph Fontl       ll l l hqЧв8BЦЯ√HRnФШn   Math EmporiumKMacintosh HD:Desktop Folder:Student's Folder:AutoRecovery save of Document1 Math Emporium?Macintosh HD:Desktop Folder:Student's Folder:2hypothesis2_a.txt Math Emporium?Macintosh HD:Desktop Folder:Student's Folder:3hypothesis2_b.txt @Аkk╕BЎ╞╞kk5l@@GРTimes New Roman5РАSymbol3Р Arial3РTimes"qИ╨hX┌RFX┌RF!е└┤┤А20d╨  !Hypothesis 2 soft tissue trauma Math Emporium Math Emporium■  рЕЯЄ∙OhлС+'│┘0АИР╝╚рь№ < H T`hpx'"Hypothesis 2 ╨ soft tissue traumaosypoMath Emporium sathNormalpMath Emporium s2thMicrosoft Word 8.0 @дУ╓@└5э╚а└@└5э╚а└■  ╒═╒Ь.УЧ+,∙о0 hpИРШа и░╕└ ╚ Ў'Virginia Tech2м "Hypothesis 2 ╨ soft tissue trauma Title ■    ■   ■    !■   ¤   $■   ■   ■                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Root Entry         └FihЯа└&А1Table             WordDocument        SummaryInformation(    DocumentSummaryInformation8            CompObj    XObjectPool            ihЯа└ihЯа└            ■                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           ■      └FMicrosoft Word Document■   NB6WWord.Document.8
