Management Plan In order to treat septic arthritis, systemic antibiotics are needed. The most appropriate antibiotic in view of the results of the culture and sensitivity is ceftiofur sodium at a dose of 2.2 mg/kg IM BID. This regimen should be continued for 4-6 weeks. Analgesics in the form of phenylbutazone should also be given. This will also limit inflammation. If the lameness and swelling do not resolve, a second joint culture and sensitivity should be performed. Intra-articular lavage and antibiotic infusion should be considered at this point as well as arthroscopy. A re-evaluation should be done at the end of the antibiotic course.
