Plan of Action: We will perform radiographic evaluation of Jocelyn's hips under sedation. We would like a ventrodorsal view with the hips fully extended to see into the joint space to evaluate cartilage (abnormal ossification of articular cartilage) and the femoral head (malformation). We would also like a lateral image with one leg extended forward and the other pulled backwards to allow us to see into the joint space. We will also use these radiographs to rule out any fractures or trauma. While the dog is under sedation we will also evaluate the right hip for a positive Ortelani sign which would indicate hip laxity. We will also thoroughly evaluate both coxofemoral joints again under sedation. While waiting for radiographs we will instruct the client as to proper nutritional management of a young growing large breed dog. We feel that it is important that Jocelyn be taken off her free choice food and be fed a portion controlled diet. This will hopefully slow down her muscle gain and allow her limbs to "catch up."
