Specialty Results The radiographs showed a significant non-union fracture of metacarpus three and four of the left front leg. The fracture was classified as a viable delayed union, hypertrophic fracture. The proximal segment has significant callous formation, while the distal segment has minimal callous formation. The distal half of the fracture is angled laterally in a valgus formation, due to the poor reduction technique previously applied. The fracture also contains several segments not attached to the main fracture pieces. There is considerable soft tissue swelling. There may be marked muscle atrophy, however, the evidence for this is masked by the increased tissue density due to the swelling. The blood work came back normal. There is no evidence of systemic infection or a stress leukogram. The urinalysis is also normal. The kidneys are working well with a concentrated, clear urine. Also, there is no evidence of a urinary tract infection, which could have occurred if there was a systemic infection. The lab data from the fracture site confirmed a local infection to this area because bacteria cultures revealed E. coli and Staph to be present.
