Primary Biliary Cirrhosis                                      

Biliary Cirrhosis is categorized into Primary and Secondary Biliary Cirrhosis; the former is caused by autoantibodies and the latter being an aquired condition.  

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis is caused by the autoimmune destruction of the small bile ducts in the liver.  The cause is uknown.  PBC is thought to be a type IV hypersenstivity reaction because Cytotoxic T cells are found within the lesions.

Signs and Symptoms:

    Jaundice    Jaundice in eyes    fat deposits in eyelids    bone pain    abdominal pain    

Testing:

Liver enzyme levels, liver biopsy, mitochondrial Antibody ID

Treatment:

Liver transplant, Liver surgery, supportive care.
