This Concept Map, created with IHMC CmapTools, has information related to: urt surgeries, Prosthetic Laryngeoplasty/ Tie-Back Advantages and Disadvantages/ Complications Advantages: -Procedure is very common and has a high rate of success. Common complications : -The permanent opening of the left side of the larynx can hinder its ability to protect the airways during deglutition leading to possible aspiration of food into the lungs. -Coughing and nasal discharge of food or water is possible. -Dysphagia -Wound infection and the failure of the left side of the larynx to remain fully abducted due to breakage of the suture material., Laryngohyoid Reduction/ Tie-Forward Advantages and Disadvantages/ Complications Advantages: -Short recovery time, horses usually return to work within 4 weeks -High success rate up to 80% Complications: -Wound infection - presents as heat, swelling and discharge at the wound site. -Spread of Infection to the implant sutures - wound infections can spread to involve the sutures used to fix the larynx and can be difficult to treat, sometimes necessitating removal of the surgical implant sutures. -Surgical failure - if the tension in the sutures holding the larynx is not correct it may not prevent the DDSP. Early turn out may contribute to loosening of the sutures., SURGERIES OF THE EQUINE UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT ???? Prosthetic Laryngeoplasty/ Tie-Back, SURGERIES OF THE EQUINE UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT ???? Laryngohyoid Reduction/ Tie-Forward, Ventriculocordectomy/ Hobday Advantages and Disadvantages/ Complications Advantages: -Can be done in a standing horse via transendoscopic laser surgery which offers a number of benefits over the traditional surgery. It can be done under a mild sedation so it avoids the risk of general anaesthetic, the horses can return to work more quickly and there is no surgical scar under the throat making it less traumatic for the horse Disadvantage/ Complications: -This is only beneficial in horses that produce a respiratory noise without poor performance, as a Hobday only removes the source of the noise but will not correct an abnormal airflow. -Prolonged incision healing time. -Laryngeal swelling with possible need for tracheal intubation. -Granuloma formation and arytnoid chondrosis. -Latent thermal damage if laser procedure is used., SURGERIES OF THE EQUINE UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT ???? Ventriculocordectomy/ Hobday
