Carbohydrates: Lipids: Proteins:
STRUCTURE- Carbohydrates are molecular compounds created from carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Carbohydrates are simple sugars known as monosaccharides, but they can combine to form more complex carbohydrates and carbohydrates consisting of a larger amount of sugars than ten become known as polysaccharides.
FUNCTION- Provides our body with energy needed for physical activity, brain function, and operation of the organs. EFFECT ON THE BODY- Provide energy for the body, most importantly to the brain and nervous system. |
STRUCTURE- The basic structure of lipids are Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen. All lipids are fatty acids. The type of fatty acid determines whether the lipid is a saturated or unsaturated fat.
FUNCTION- Lipids are used for long term energy storage and are the secondary source of energy use in the body. Lipids also form cell membranes. EFFECT ON THE BODY- Lipids can have good effects and bad effects on the body. Unsaturated fats are all the fast foods and fatty things that do not help out. Unsaturated fats help the body maintain a good level of fats the body requires. Lipids when not being used by the body are stored as fat cells to preserve their energy. The more this keeps building up, causes people to get fatter and fatter. |
STRUCTURE- The primary structure is the way in which amino acids are arranged. Pleated sheets and alpha helices are stabilized by hydrogen bonding in the second structure.
FUNCTION- Proteins build up muscles, hair, bones, etc. They do not supply us with energy. EFFECT ON THE BODY- The more proteins your body gets, the more your body can grow and develop. |
Enzymes:
STRUCTURE- Many enzymes consist of a factor and a co-factor, the factor is a protein and the co-factor is the non-protein.
FUNCTION- Enzymes are extremely effective catalyst for biochemicals reactions. They fasten reactions by supplying an alternative reaction pathway of minor activation energy.
EFFECT ON THE BODY- Enzymes help reactions go faster in digestive and metabolic process.
